UE Red Warriors subdue UST Growling Tigers
The University of the East (UE) Red Warriors broke out of its shell and finally won this season as they upend the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers, 96-91, in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 80 Men’s Basketball tournament on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. The Tigers used various runs to catch up with UE after falling behind by 15 points but the Red Warriors always had the answers.
UE team captain Alvin Pasaol delivered the dagger with 22 seconds left in the payoff period.
Pasaol led the Warriors with 32 points on a 58% shooting to go with his 10 rebounds, while Philip Manalang contributed 20 markers on a 64% shooting and seven assists against three turnovers. Marvin Lee paced the España-based squad with 20 points while import Steve Akomo chipped in 19 markers and 18 boards.
The UE Red Warriors finally got it first win to end the first round with a 1-6 slate, while the UST Growling Tigers fell hard to the bottom with a 0-7 record, their worst start in UAAP history.
