Fighting Maroons dump Bulldogs

The University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons overpowered the National University (NU) Bulldogs, 106-81, in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 80 Men’s Basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.

Fighting Maroon Paul Desiderio poured 21 of his 30 points and Gomez de Liano brothers combined for 24 as UP surged to a 58-45 lead at halftime.

The Diliman-based squad continued its domination as they outscored NU in the third frame, 26-15, to increase the lead to 24 at the end of third, 84-60.

The Fighting Maroons had a significant margin in the rebounding column, 57-38.

Juan Gomez de Liano finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds while his brother Javi delivered 17 markers and 10 boards.

Issa Gaye had 25 points and 10 caroms for NU. Team Captain J-Jay Alejandro bid farewell to his UAAP career with 16 markers and eight assists.

UP finished the eliminations at fifth place with a 6-8 slate, while NU closed out at sixth seed with a 5-9 record.

The Fighting Maroons is now looking into UAAP Season 81 where highly-touted import Bright Akhuetie will be eligible to play after serving his residency this season.
